What is Ringwood Waldorf’s take on the implementationof VAT into independent schools?

All of us at Ringwood Waldorf School are deeply disappointed by the Government’s decision to implement a 20% VAT on private and independent education, effective January 2025—just six weeks away. As a school and alongside being a member of Waldorf UK, we have lobbied tirelessly to raise awareness about Waldorf Schools and the unique education it offers compared to other private school models.

Unlike many other private schools, Ringwood Waldorf School is not driven by prestige or exclusivity. We are a community-focused school, committed to providing a meaningful and inclusive education. We operate genuinely as a charity and work on a break-even budget. Our fees remain significantly lower than those of other local private schools and well below the national average, reflecting our commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

Unlike some private schools that can offset costs through significant savings or private investments, we do not have those resources. As a result, starting in January 2025, our fees will include this additional 20% VAT, which families will need to cover. We are not increasing our school’s fees in this process, just adding on the 20% VAT that the government is now asking us to collect on its behalf. Additionally, the removal of business rates relief for private schools will increase our expenses by £30,000 annually.

We understand that this change may pose challenges for some families. To support our community, we have set aside a dedicated VAT support fund from our reserves. Families who need assistance with these additional costs are encouraged to contact us by midday on November 20th so we can allocate this fund to those who need it most and prepare invoices for January 1st.

Looking ahead, we are also investing in a new website and updated marketing initiatives, launching in January 2025. Attracting new families to our school will help manage these financial pressures and ensure the VAT support fund remains available beyond the 2024/2025 school year.

We are committed to supporting our families and our community during this challenging time.If you have any questions or concerns about the changes to school fees, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

You can call us at 01425 472664, email us at mail@ringwoodwaldorfschool.org.uk, or visit reception.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our school community.
