Sponsored Walk

On Friday 25th March 30 students from classes 6,7,8 and Upper School set off on a ten mile sponsored walk from school, with three teachers in their midst, to raise money for the DEC Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. Many children wore yellow and blue, one class 7 student handed out some hand knitted yellow and blue badges his mum had kindly made, and the feeling of teamwork amongst the students, as well as solidarity and support for the people of Ukraine was evident.

Luckily for us it was a beautiful sunny day and as we are situated along the Castleman Trailway we did the full ten miles on forest tracks, through to Moors Valley then following lake side paths to West Moors and back, without crossing or walking along any roads. How lucky we are!

Despite the tragic reasons for our walk taking place, the children kept spirits up, enjoyed each others company – and the Moors Valley ice creams!  – and all made the full ten miles. It is often so overwhelming to hear the news, and the feeling of helplessness can sometimes take over. But when a group of children, teenagers (and teachers!) volunteer to work together to do what they can to help, in whatever way is possible, it is such a powerful and uplifting experience.

For many years now there has been a charity group of students from class 6 upwards who meet regularly and plan events such as sponsored walks, bike rides, ice cream sales, fun days, litter picks, food banks etc. raising funds and awareness for a number of causes such as homelessness, orphanages, emergency shelter, poverty and environmental issues both in the UK are further afield. Formerly known as the WE group (but now in the process of a name change) we are recruiting new members soon!
