Press Release: Introductory Morning – a chance to see our school at work

The Ringwood Waldorf School in Ringwood, Hampshire welcomed visitors and families to find out more about their alternative ‘Steiner’ approach to education last week as part of their May open day.

Visitors to the open day were treated to performances and exhibitions of work by the schools current students – which included musical performances, dancing, art and poetry; and the parents and children of the younger ‘Kindergarten’ classes displayed their skills with bread making and crafts.

Speaking at the event was class two teacher, Marcus Johnson, who gave an informative and well-attended talk on the values of Waldorf education.

The Ringwood Waldorf School is one of more than 900 Steiner Waldorf schools worldwide, and renounces the mainstream exam led approach to education, instead taking inspiration from the educational principles of Austrian philosopher and social reformer, Rudolf Steiner. The Steiner approach to education believes that early years learning should focus on providing practical and hands-on activities through creative play, before moving on to developing pupils’ artistic expression and social capacities. Secondary education aims to support with the development of the student’s understanding of the world around them through independent learning.

Attending the event was the school’s founder, Christine Polyblank, who commented:

All the classrooms had exhibitions of the children’s work and it was wonderful to be able to look through all the many books displayed and take stock of the vast number of subjects covered by the children as they go up through the classes.

A special treat for me is always to meet old scholars returning to show their partners their ‘old’ school and viewing it now as potential parents.

School administrator, Nigel Revil, who conducted the walking tours said,

It was a great day, and it was lovely to meet so many people with an interest in the school.

The Ringwood Waldorf School will be holding the next introductory morning on Wednesday the 17th of June 2015, allowing parents and visitors to see the school at work.

Those who are interested in booking a place should contact Liz Tomkins, Admissions Secretary, at the school office on 01425 472664, or complete a inquiry form on the school’s website, www.ringwoodwaldorfschool.org.uk
