Bothmer Movement Workshop

With Martin Baker at Ringwood Waldorf School on 18th May 9:30 – 17:30.

Beginning in 1922 as he arrived to teach at the first Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany, Count Friedrich von Bothmer (1883-1941) developed a series of exercises which trace and enhance the developing movement faculties of the growing human being. Space, as he experienced it, went beyond the three-dimensional concept, and he became aware of the creative, spiritual forces at work on the human being. He saw space as having a spiritual quality in which the human being stands in a dynamic, rhythmical interplay of forces.

To play, exercise and move can give us deep satisfaction. We feel ourselves freer and yet more engaged in the world. It is interesting to discover that all languages are full of references to movement and direction, used metaphorically.

We can say that there is a direct link between our mind or inner world and the outer world of space around us. For instance, if I ask you for a straight answer, you know that I am asking for an honest or truthful reply, but I used a quality of space (straight) to describe it. A criminal is a crook (crooked), and a politician’s ‘spin’ circumvents straightness and truth.

When we move, we are in constant play with the forces and meaning of the space around us. We show something of ourselves when we move, but most importantly, the converse is true. When we work on our movement, we change inwardly too. Movement can be a strong tool in a self-development process and Bothmer Movement provides a healthy and deeply spiritual possibility that many have benefitted from over the last hundred years.

Our workshops are suitable for anyone interested, and if you can sit, stand, walk, jog for a minute or two and jump a little, you can participate – you don’t have to be an athlete, although we like those too! The time with us will be informative, fun, social and invigorating.

We will teach some of Bothmer’s exercises, play children’s games, investigate postural tendencies and outline some of the background philosophy and how movement is integral to our being.

Experience all this at Ringwood Waldorf School on 18th May in Keir Hall with Martin Baker
