Botany, Class Five
Behold the flower,
It is the butterfly
Bound by the earth!
Behold the butterfly,
It is the flower
set free by the cosmos!
By the age of 10 children are (generally) ready to critically observe the world around them and to get engaged with living science. The botany curriculum empowers the children with scientific observations and discovery as well as the feelings, ideas and poetry of nature. Rudolf Steiner recommended that Class 5 is an appropriate time for the study of plants, whose growth and movement has a quiet beauty of form, gesture and colour. The next four weeks are intended to deepen the children’s sensitivity and understanding of the plant world and for the earth as a living organism.
