April Main Lesson Roundup – Upper School

Conic Sections in Class 9

Class 9 are currently studying Conic Sections. We have studied the history and algebraic principles of circles, ellipses, parabolas and hyperbolas alongside the architectural skills of loci, construction, plans, elevations, scale and nets. We have been eagerly spotting conic sections in the world around us: natural and man-made. We’re now very excited this week to begin using all these principles to construct our own 3D structures which include conic sections.

Poetry in Class 10

In the Poetry Main Lesson, Class 10 considers the nature and craft of poetry and the ways and means by which language becomes an art form, and a way of true expression.
Nancy, Upper School English Teacher

‘The poet, as everyone knows, must strike his individual note sometime between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five.  He may hold it a long time, or a short time, but it is then that he must strike it or never.  School and college have been conducted with the almost express purpose of keeping him busy with something else till the danger of his ever creating anything is past.’    Robert Frost

Zoology in Class 12

In the Class 12 main lesson, we have been studying zoology and the story of animals from the primordial oceans to mammals. We’ve been speculating at the possible evolutionary routes for the development of certain characteristics using as much supporting evidence as possible. In week 1, we got as far as flatworms and by the end of week 2, we had a day to appreciate insects. This week, we explore a very small little group of animals called the chordates and learn why they are so important.|
