Equity means fair treatment for all people, taking into consideration each person’s unique circumstances.
A diverse community is made up of people with differing identities, backgrounds and experiences that are reflective of the society we live in.
Inclusion means being proactive to make sure everyone is respected and fully able to participate within a community where individuals can be their full selves.
At Ringwood Waldorf School, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment that values differences among individuals. We champion social justice, human rights, and equity, guiding our students to embrace open-mindedness, tolerance, and the celebration of diversity.
Our educational philosophy aims to cultivate a community where every child can grow authentically and feel accepted for who they are. We prioritize ensuring that all children, their families, and the broader community are respected, represented, and acknowledged. Diversity is embraced as a fundamental aspect of our culture, reinforcing the idea that we support and uplift one another, regardless of our backgrounds. Our curriculum, festivals, and learning resources reflect a variety of family structures, genders, cultural heritages, belief systems, and abilities, creating a rich tapestry of representation.
As part of a broader movement in the UK and beyond, we are committed to equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-evolving world. This includes integrating age-appropriate content on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as well as Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), into our comprehensive curriculum.
At Ringwood Waldorf School, we acknowledge the longstanding injustice and discrimination faced by people of colour both in the UK and globally, and we recognize the ongoing impact of this discrimination. Our commitment to anti-racism is integral to our ethos, fostering a culture of inquiry, self-education, and self-reflection for both individuals and the organisation.
To be truly anti-racist, we strive to actively identify and oppose racism in all forms, conscious or unconscious. While Rudolf Steiner’s educational principles guide us, we reject any discriminatory concepts present in his early 20th-century work on anthroposophy. Our mission is to uphold the values of individuality and shared humanity central to Waldorf education.
We are aware of the lack of diversity within our organisation and are dedicated to transforming it into a more inclusive space. This includes integrating anti-racist approaches throughout the curriculum and involving students in discussions about racism and inclusivity. We acknowledge that mistakes may occur but commit to listening, learning, and fostering partnerships that support this work.
Our initiatives include the establishment of Racial Equality and Diversity Leads, and the development of training resources to enhance diversity in our curriculum. We are part of a global Waldorf movement, collaborating with schools across 80 countries to ensure that our educational practices reflect diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Ringwood Waldorf School fully endorses the following statement from Waldorf UK, which represents Steiner Waldorf schools in the UK and Ireland:
“The SWSF is opposed to all forms of discrimination against any person or group of people on the grounds of race, gender, faith, disability, age and sexual orientation and is committed to promoting equality of opportunity and reflecting the diversity of the children, staff and parents served by Steiner / Waldorf schools. We also reject any racism stated or implied in any of Rudolf Steiner’s speeches and writings (dating from the mid-1880s to his death in 1925).
These concepts do not inform our education in any way: they influence neither content nor methodology and sit in contrast with Steiner’s humanist philosophy which was based on a profound respect for the individuality and shared humanity of all people which is central to our work.”
We recognise that choosing a school is a big decision. We invite you to visit us and learn more about how a Waldorf education at Ringwood Waldorf School can benefit your child.
